George W. Bush - Oh, that letter to Congress linking Saddam and 9/11 ... By Timothy Noah

Two days ago, President Bush told the country that the administration had never linked Saddam and Iraq with the terrorist attacks of 9/11. But Slate magazine reprints a letter to Congress, meant to justify an attack on Iraq, which proves that they did, in fact make that link. If you can't get Slate, here is the reprint:

"[A]cting pursuant to the Constitution and [the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002] is consistent with the United States and other countries continuing to take the necessary actions against international terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those nations, organizations, or persons who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001."
—President Bush, in a letter to Congress outlining the legal justification for commencing war against Iraq, March 18, 2003

Why can't these guys stop lying to the American people?

Bob Newhart - Comic Genius Passes Away

A true comic genius has passed away today. One of the first comedy albums I remember listening to as a child is "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart." His most famous shtick was the telephone conversation where the audience hears only his end of the call. The most famous and best of this is the " Introducing Tobacco to Civilization " skit.

Now consider that the republicans have to know that the Democrats stand a very good chance of regaining the upper hand in both the House and the Senate in the up-coming elections. If this happens, the Democrats will have subpoena powers to compel the release of documents that will undoubtedly show the world exactly what kind of thuggery the republicans have been engaged in. The republicans have to know that impeachment procedures will be initiated in the Senate against President Bush for his crimes against, and lies to the American people. These things being true, I am very concerned about what the republicans will be willing to do (and what they are per...

Senator Kennedy

Honestly, I don't understand the furor over this latest Kennedy flap. There is no proof that he had been drinking, and nobody got shot in the face. And as we all know, according to precedent, it's perfectly acceptable for high ranking government officials to get liquored up and shoot folks in the face. That didn't happen, so as I said, I really don't understand what all the fuss is about.
