Kerry Speech IV (Lincoln Quote)

The Lincoln quote was the best thing he could have said regarding the Christian Right, which I believe had to be the intended audience. During the war, Lincoln overheard someone remark that he hoped "the Lord was on the Union's side." Lincoln responded with this sharp rebuke: "I am not at all concerned about that, for I know that the Lord is always on the side of the right. But it is my constant anxiety and prayer that I and this nation should be on the Lord's side." Kerry Speech II (Band of Brothers)

One has to love the whole "Band of Brothers" thing. Named from a portion of the 'St. Crispin's Day' monologue from Shakespear's "Henry V," its a beautiful thing. Bush can produce absolutely none of this. The irony, of course, is the Democrats trying hard to portray themselves as a war party. Its something they're just not used to, but I think Kerry is doing a good job. And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by, From this day to the ending of the world, But we in it shall be remember'd; We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile, This day shall gentle his condition: And gentlemen in England now a-bed Shall think themselves accursed they were not here, And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day. From "Henry V" by William Shakespear

Kerry Speech I

I'm sittin here watching John Kerry speak on C-Span's coverage, and I can tell that whoever is handling the hand-held camera on the floor is a young dude. He finds the obligatory minority, and then focuses on a cute girl.

VOANews.com

He's gonna take a lot of shit for being the one to say it, but Australia's Foreign Secretary Mr. Downer (what an unfortunate name) is right when he says that the Phillippine's withdrawal of military personnel in reaction to the taking and threatening of hostages, has and will, spark more hostages to be taken.

A Break from the Heat

I'm very happy that the temperature has come down a bit today. I haven't blogged since Wednesday because my main computer is upstairs and its just been too freaking hot to sit up there and write. It doesn't help that the den is on the western side of the house and we get all the afternoon sun, so its hot, hot, hot! But things are better now and I'm back to spilling my guts for all to read.

Yahoo! News - Armstrong Wins Historic Sixth Tour Title

See also this BBC story. Like many football (read, soccer) fans in this country, cycling enthusiasts would like to see professional cycle road racing become much more popular here at home. Lance Armstrong is, arguably, the greatest American athlete of the past century and most Americans have no idea what professional cycling is all about. Just in output of energy over time, cycling makes (American) football, basketball, and baseball look like games for asthmatics suffering from tuberculosis.
