Bon Odori Festival

Jessica and I went to the Seattle Buddhist Temple's Bon Odori (Obon) Festival again this year, and it was as pretty as ever. They close off the street and hang paper lanterns and have traditional dancing in the street. Its very lively with many people dressed in traditional clothes. The guys look kinda cool in their robes and the women and girls are beautiful in their colorful kimonos. My little phone camera doesn't do any justice, but I put the pics up anyway.

Bon Odori, or Obon, dates back to 6th century China and is a primary festival of Japanese Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. The purpose of the festival is to pay respects to one's ancestors.

The Seattle Buddhist Temple is of this Jodo Shinshu 'branch' of Buddhism, which is primarily found in Japan. It has always seemed to me that the Japanese consider that if something is worth doing, its worth doing prettily. Obon is no exception, its very pretty. And, since its mostly Japanese people running around, its an opportunity for even the shortest 'round-eye' to feel like a tall person.

I've always wanted to participate in something like that. NC isn't very cultured like that, mostly colonial things to be apart of....

Friends don't let friends vote for Bush

I have a friend who, I’m very nearly certain, voted for Bush. He told me as recently as a week prior to the election that he was considering voting for Bush because of the terrorism issue. I’m thinking very seriously about cutting him off as a friend. You see, the problem isn’t necessarily that he voted for Bush, it’s that I no longer respect him for coming to that decision. Having succumbed to America’s jingoistic view of Muslims I now think that perhaps my friend doesn’t have the intellectual agility I originally credited to him. Is there any one else out there who feels betrayed by a friend who voted for Bush? I’m interested in reader’s opinions on the matter so please post a comment.

Away Too Long

I know...I know, its been far too long since my last post. But I'm here now and I'll catch you up on everything. So, since getting laid-off, I have been thinking about going back to school. The thing is, I've been thinking about going back for 10 years, but the thought of it always filled me with terror because I couldn't figure out what I wanted to do. Well, I decided to go to Seattle Central and get a certificate in computer networking. My thinking is this: get certified in something that leads to working smart instead of hard. Then, that job can take me back to school for something I really want to do. So anyway, there is a program through Unemployment Insurance called the Commissioner Approved Training Plan that allows one to go to school while still recieving one's unemployment benefits, without having to do the weekly job searches. The program doesn't pay for school, it just allows one to go to school and not have to work. Sounds like a great program, huh?...

How Boring

OK, so I decided that I wasn't going to write anything political, that I was just gonna write about personal stuff. And I haven't written a thing in two weeks. How boring is my life? But I've got some stuff coming.....
